This weekend, we welcome Punjab United FC to The Jockey Farm Stadium and if last season is anything to go by, this could be a mouth-watering tie.
Picture the scene- 80 minutes in, three goals down at home from set piece goals, Rusthall's 8 unbeaten game record in tatters and we win a penalty. A consolation goal, right? Or the start of a comeback? Well Yassin Fares converted that penalty to set the wheels in motion, two minutes later, Charlie Clover makes it 3-2. A further two minutes later and Kalani Barton draws us level- the scenes at this point were out of this world! And to cap off the most remarkable comeback, in the 88th minute Kalani Barton makes it a brace and sends Jockey Farm into a frenzy! As joyous as that was, let's hope this weekend is a little bit more straightforward.
Ourselves and Punjab have always enjoyed mixed fortunes in this game- they knocked us out of the FA Cup last year, beating us 2-1 at home. They also took the last playoff spot from us last season and fair play to them for doing that.
Punjab are a relatively new club, founded in 2003, They hold the accolade of being the first Asian team to win the Kent County League and did so setting a points record.
Punjab come in to the game a lot lower down the table than even they expected and while the highs of finishing in the play off spots last season are not beyond them yet, they've had some mixed results this season. We have met already this season back in September in a game the Rustics felt they should have won. We arguably could've been out of sight by half time and when a red card saw Punjab reduced to 10 men just before half time, Rusthall would have felt they could go on and win the game. However, an incredibly resolute defensive performance from Punjab limited Rusthall to minimal chances and the game ended 1-1.
Rusthall will be looking to go one better at home. A fantastic home record of 6 wins and 2 draws means Rusthall are unbeaten at home, scoring an impressive 28 goals in those 8 games. Punjab have travelled relatively well this season, winning 4 from 7 on the road.
Over the last 6 games, the two teams have an identical recod, wining 4, losing 1 and drawing 1. As such, this promises to be a close game and no doubt Punjab will be wanting to make amends for last season's result. The Rustics will have it all to do!
Will the Rustics get the valuable 3 points to push them in the right direction? There's only one way to find out- be there!
