Despite a late 2 goal flourish the Rustics suffered their first league defeat of the season at the hands of a physical Rochester United side who went top of the table with the win.
The game started well with Rusthall putting the home side under pressure with their slick passing game and for 15 minutes they were camped in the Rochester half but failed to create any clear cut chances.
Rochester gradually came to terms with the Rusthall style of play and started to press the visitors as they tried their tried their build from the back approach and on several occasions forced the Rusthall defenders into giving the ball away. On 27 minutes Rochester were rewarded for their efforts, the Rustics gave away a soft corner on the right and as they failed to clear central defender Lewis Cook was on hand to rifle home from inside the box.
Rusthall seemed stunned by this set back and their play became scrappy as the home side pressured them into silly mistakes and they were happy to go in at the interval just 1 down.
But in the first minute of the second half Rochester doubled their advantage with a goal from Harrison Hume. The home side were now full of confidence and were taking advantage of Rusthall's failure to keep the ball and made it 3-0 on 55 minutes, once again Rusthall were guilty of giving the ball away and Harry Hornsby scored with a neat finish.
Rusthall rang the changes with 3 substitutions as they desperately looked to get back into the game. The unlikely come back started in the 67th minute from an unlikely source, good biild up play down the right led to a cross to the far post and wing back Callum Gallie score with a fine header at the far post. The Rustics were now looking a different side as they pinned the home side back and a tense finish was made possible when Luke Adams drilled the ball home on 85 minutes. Rusthall were now throwing everything at Rochester who were guilty of some crude and desperate challenges as Rusthall went in search of an unlikely equaliser which did not come . The Rustic's must move on quickly from this set back as on Saturday they entertain Combined Counties League Godlaming Town at the Jockey Farm Stadium in the F.A.Vase looking for a place in the first round proper of the competition.
